Code For Sustainable Homes
The code for sustainable homes is now mandatory for all new build dwellings.
The code assesses the sustainability of all the components necessary to construct new dwellings, the standard covers 9 categories of sustainability:
- Energy
- Water Usage
- Materials
- Surface water run off
- Waste - recyclable and non recyclable
- Pollution
- Health and Wellbeing
- Management
- Ecology
The assessment is a two stage process:
Stage 1
The design stage normally involves 1 or 2 meetings with the
designer/contractor to discuss all the above issues and get commitments and agree design changes to ensure
compliance in achieving the credit rating in accordance with the level of sustainability
required
Stage 2
The post contract stage involves the production of documentary evidence to
substantiate the credit scored for each category, and these to be submitted to the BRE, the code
provider for verification and issuing of the star rating final certificates.
